Before Treatment
- Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before treatment.
- Please inform us of all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you are taking, particularly prescription blood thinners.
- Avoid aspirin, fish oil, and other nonessential medications or supplements that may increase bruising for 5–7 days before treatment. Do not stop any prescribed medication without consulting your prescribing clinician.
- Avoid NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) for 2–3 days before treatment, when medically appropriate.
- Avoid vaccinations and dental procedures, including cleanings, for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and do not arrive with a sunburn or significant skin irritation.
- If you have a history of cold sores or herpes around the mouth, notify us at least one week before your appointment. Preventive antiviral medication may be recommended.
- Notify us immediately if you develop an active cold sore, skin infection, open wound, or significant irritation around the mouth, as your appointment may need to be rescheduled.
- Plan treatment at least 2 weeks before an important event in case swelling or bruising occurs.
- Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.
- Have a light meal or snack before your appointment.
- Arrive with clean lips and skin, free of makeup, skincare, and lip products.
After Treatment
- Mild swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness is normal and typically improves over the first few days.
- Apply a cool compress gently for 5–10 minutes at a time, only a few times during the first 24 hours as needed. Do not apply ice directly to the skin or over-ice the area.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used as directed for discomfort, if medically appropriate.
- Keep the lips clean and wash your hands before touching the treated area.
- Stay well hydrated after treatment.
- Avoid touching, rubbing, massaging, or applying excessive pressure to the lips for 24 hours unless instructed by your provider.
- Avoid kissing or prolonged pressure on the lips for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid excessive heat, including saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure, for 48 hours.
- Avoid makeup and lip products on the treated area for at least 48 hours. Plain Vaseline or an unscented arnica lip balm may be used as needed.
- Avoid vaccinations and dental procedures, including cleanings, for 2 weeks after treatment.
