Before Treatment

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before treatment.
  • Please inform us of all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you are taking, particularly prescription blood thinners.
  • Avoid aspirin, fish oil, and other nonessential medications or supplements that may increase bruising for 5–7 days before treatment. Do not stop any prescribed medication without consulting your prescribing clinician.
  • Avoid NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) for 2–3 days before treatment, when medically appropriate.
  • Avoid vaccinations and dental procedures, including cleanings, for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment.
  • If you have a history of cold sores or herpes around the mouth, notify us at least one week before your appointment. Preventive antiviral medication may be recommended.
  • Notify us immediately if you develop an active cold sore, skin infection, open wound, or significant irritation around the mouth, as your appointment may need to be rescheduled.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and do not arrive with a sunburn or significant skin irritation.
  • Plan treatment at least 2 weeks before an important event in case swelling or bruising occurs.
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.
  • Have a light meal or snack before your appointment.
  • Arrive with clean lips and skin, free of makeup, skincare, and lip products.

After Treatment

  • Swelling, bruising, tenderness, firmness, itching, or mild numbness can occur after treatment. Swelling often peaks within the first 24–48 hours and may take up to a week to fully resolve.
  • Apply a cool compress gently for 5–10 minutes at a time, only a few times during the first 24–48 hours as needed. Do not apply ice directly to the skin or over-ice the area.
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used as directed for discomfort, if medically appropriate.
  • Keep your lips clean and wash your hands before touching the treated area.
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, massaging, kissing, straw use, or applying excessive pressure to the lips for 48 hours unless instructed by your provider.
  • Avoid makeup and lip products on the treated area for 48 hours. Plain Vaseline or an unscented arnica lip balm may be used as needed.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to reduce the chance of bruising.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat—including saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure—for 48 hours.
  • Stay well hydrated after treatment.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid unnecessary contact with the treated area.
  • Avoid vaccinations and dental procedures, including cleanings, for 2 weeks after treatment.
  • Results are visible immediately but continue to settle as swelling subsides. Final results are typically assessed around 2-3 weeks after tour treatment at your follow-up visit.
